Longmen Temple

These two temples are from Longmen Temple, Shanxi. Longmen Temple contains more than seventy houses dating from the Five Dynasties to the Qing Dynasties, which is more than eight hundred years.

The building from the photo on the left is called Mahavira Hall. It was built during the Song Dynasty. The beam structure of this temple preserves and shares the design of the buildings from the Song Dynasty. The photo in the middle is a good illustration of the beam structure of the building.

The temple from the photo on the right was built back in the Five Dynasties. This building is the oldest in Longmen Temple. It was even built before Longmen Temple. The structure of the building is very concise and shares the same characteristic as the architecture from the Tang Dynasties. The roof of the building helps it to avoid the rain. There are no other buildings in China from the Five Dynasties that share the same type of roof.
